The use of the chinrest is recent,
from about the middle of the 19th century.
Until then, the instrument was placed freely on the collar bone, or the chest.
The introduction of the chinrest brings
the instrument closer to the player's neck
allowing the musician
to increase the virtues of both the
instrument and the player.
It appears to be a painful position that one has
to learn to transcend
