The tailpiece links the 4 strings to the bottom
of the instrument.
This piece originally made in lightwood is now reinforced in order to support the greater tension of modern metal strings.
The fine tuners appear to ease the tuning of those metal strings which are more sensitive to tension.

   Consult:   Pernambucco tailpieces

Nervous and resistant like a spring, the sound travels through pernambucco quicker than any other wood. Its disposition to conduct sound makes it an ideal wood for tailpieces.
Improving the acoustic quality of their instruments, musicians say that it gives a more open sound and a better placement of the sound.

Why 4 fine tuners on a violin?
Traditionally the "E" string has one.
Musicians prefer metal strings more and more and the fine tuner offers precision to smoother tuning.
It was impossible until recently to fit several fine tuners: the result was offensive as much for the aesthetics as it was for the sound. With the introduction of light composite fine tuners tighteners, the choice became wide open; one can have the option of taking out one, two or even three fine tuners tighteners and keep the traditional fitting on the other strings.

Technical Notes
Several lengths of tailpieces are available:
(in order to suit the length of the instrument)
Violin 108 &112 mm,or 43.2" & 44.8"
Viola 125, 130 ; 135mm,or 50",52";54"
Cello , 200, 220, 235,250mm or 80",88",94",100".
The extra light composite fine tuners tighteners are an innovation of "Bois d'Harmonie". They avoid the muting effect and give more clarity and dynamics to the sound. The "Harmonie cello" tailpiece is lighter than the well known tailpiece made in black plastic…
The ivory used is authorised. (Mammouth fossil).
Violin and viola have a saddle (ebony or ivory), whereas the tailpieces for the cello don't have one.
